-   Session 1 with Tim Keller    -

Who Do You Think You Are

Finding your identity in Christ and investing in a spirit-led manner.

In Session 1, Tim shares about the importance of having our identity firmly rooted in Christ, rather than in our money, possessions, or success. Tim reminds us that instead of rejoicing in earthly things, we must rejoice that our “names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). As Faith Driven Investors, we must invest 1) objectively and 2) subjectively in line with the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

REVIEW

  • Our identity must be solidly rooted in Christ, rather than in money, possessions, or success.

  • Rather than rejoicing in earthly things (like investment returns), we must rejoice that our “names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

  • Faith Driven Investing must be 1) objectively and 2) subjectively in line with the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

EXPLORE THE PRINCIPLES FURTHER

Our Identity in Christ

  1. Tim references the following quote from Martyn Lloyd Jones: “There are many whom I have had the privilege of meeting, whose tombstone might well bear the grim epitaph: ‘…born a man, died a doctor’! The greatest danger which confronts the medical man is that he may become lost in his profession…” How do people most commonly describe you? (Businessman? Investor? Christ-follower? Spouse? Parent?) Do you think you may be lost in that profession or identity?

  2. Tim says, “Whatever you live for most becomes your identity.” What do you live for most? What would you say your identity is rooted in? (Christ? Money? Success? Reputation? Power?) If that thing were removed, would you be in an identity crisis?

Being a Spirit-led Faith Driven Investor

  1. How are you, in the words of Tim Keller, “investing in the good of others and God’s kingdom”?

  2. Why and how should the Holy Spirit guide where you invest your money?

  3. Tim talks about objective guidance of the Holy Spirit - asking yourself the question, what are the most important needs as far as God is concerned? (Hint: Evangelism is a high priority; however, God also demonstrates concern for physical needs, as seen in Mark 2:9-12.)

  4. Tim also talks about subjective guidance of the Holy Spirit - God has a calling on your life and has given you certain gifts. What needs of the world resonate with you? (Hint: what you feel burdened for is what the Holy Spirit is leading you to.)

  5. Objectively, what is the Holy Spirit doing in this world? Subjectively, what is the Holy Spirit leading me to do in this world?

Memorize

Luke 10:17-20

“The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’ He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’

Mark 2:9-12

“Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he said to the man, ‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’”

Act Differently

  • Reflect on how you are or are not “investing in the good of others and in God’s kingdom.”

  • Reflect on and pray through what the Holy Spirit is doing in this world. Ask the Holy Spirit what He is leading you to do in the world.

Tim shares with us the cultural problems of both traditional (your community defines you) and modern (you define you) identity formation and shows why the gospel is the only solution to living an authentic, impactful life.
